Europe bans RX8

Sad news for European fans of the Mazda brand, especially for those who were waiting to get behind the wheel of an RX-8 model: the Japanese manufacturer will be forced to withdraw the four-seat sports car from the European market, due to engine regulations.

The news was made public by Auto Motor & Sport Sweden via thetruthaboutcars.com, whose German colleagues had a chat with the head of Mazda Germany, Joseph Alois Schmid (!).

According to Schmid, the reason behind Europe’s decision to ban the Mazda RX-8 model is that its Wankel engine was not capable of meeting Euro 5 emissions standard. According to the Swedish newspaper, Mazda is also considering a two-seater version of the RX-7, as a surrogate meant to feed Europeans until it finds a viable solution to the RX-8 Wankel power unit.

And since sources close to the matter say that a replacement for the rotary engine unit will not become available sooner than 2013, we might as well forget it. By that time, the new unit will have to meet the Euro 6 emission standard which takes effect in 2014 and is much stricter than Euro 5, which took effect in 2009.

There are, however, some prototypes of Wankel units running on E85 ethanol and being flex-fuel capable currently raced at Targa Tasmania, but they are less likely to hit Europe. Mazda, however, is expected to continue with the hydrogen version of the rotary engine, which gives much cleaner emissions than the gasoline-powered one.

καλος και χρυσος ο wankel αλλα θα προτιμουσα να μεινει στα 7αρια... για λιγους δλδ...

το σασι του 8αριου για μενα ειναι απο τα καλυτερα που εχω οδηγησει... μακαρι να του εβαζαν ενα αλλο μοτερ πχ απο το MPS...

It is rumored to be based on next generation 1er platform and will offer more expansion in the premium compact segment. Some of the variants considered are a mild and full hybrid , along with diesel and petrol powerplants.

Target weight for both Coupe and Roadster is 2,200 lbs (1000 kg).

BMW will only offer the Z2 as a four cylinder, no six cylinder engine will be available to keep the car from entering the Z4’s segment. The base engine will be a 1.6 liter unit with twin turbo charging and direct injection , power output will be in the region of 145-150 horsepower. A second engine again will be a Twin-Turbo four cylinder unit which will output 200-204 horsepower and a 2.0 liter four cylinder Twin Turbo will top the range with 240-250 horsepower.

The roof of the BMW Z2 will retain the conventional easy folding soft-top. No electric powered hood will be offered due to the easy fold and secure function of the Z2. The roof section folds in slats with rear window section folding flat and roof concertinaing into the hood compartment. This allows for more trunk space and expands the cars lightweight intentions.

The Z2 will feature the first phase in BMW’s upcoming Intelligent LED technology. The front end appearance of the car is identified in a way that is similar to BMW’s interior technology in which instruments are illuminated using a unique black panel technology.

The front of the Z2 with Intelligent LED technology is similar, all you see is the uniquely shaped kidney grille and larger driving lights – when the lights are activated the interpretation of the BMW double headlamps are fully illuminated.

If the rumors stand, the car will be shown first as a Concept, with the production Z2 Roadster model arriving in mid 2013, and BMW Z2 Coupe late 2013.

It's the rumor that just refuses to die. We're not sure if that means there's a lot of truth behind it or it's just wishful thinking, but once again we're hearing that Mazda is hard at work on a new RX-7 sportscar. And while you might think such a vehicle would be as easy as adding a turbocharger to the existing Renesis-powered RX-8 and jettisoning the back seat (or pulling a Kabura  with the MX-5's platform), Mazda apparently has much more grandiose intentions for its next range-topping sportscar.

According to Motor Trend, Mazda's oft-talked-about 16X rotary engine is now capable of running on either gasoline or diesel with nary a difference in performance. We have to wonder about the accuracy of such claims, but if true, perhaps running on diesel or biofuels would give Mazda the eco-cred it's aiming for – specifically boosted fuel economy and lower CO2 output. In any case, MT says that Mazda is aiming for something north of 300 horsepower with improved fuel consumption, emissions and oil intake over the current Renesis.

As ever, we're taking a wait-and-see approach to these continuing rumors. As much as we'd love to see a new RX on the scene, we're beginning to wonder if it's ever going to happen. In the meantime, enjoy the photo gallery of the too-awesome-for-words Mazda Furai concept.

To πιο πιθανο ειναι να μη μοιαζει καθολου ή να μη βγει ποτε στην αγορα...Κλασικα πραγματα.Να υπενθυμισω οτι η κυκλοφορια της Ζ2 ανακοινωνεται αρκετα χρονια τωρα...

Χτες είδα ή μάλλον άκουσα κατάλευκο GT-R με αλλαγμένες εξατμίσεις. Η ξεραϊλα τους ήταν το κάτι άλλο και μου θύμισε κάτι από 911 GT3, αλλά στο πιο δυνατό. Γιάννη βγες από την κρυψώνα σου και πες μας τι ξέρεις για το κτήνος. :giveheart:
