Title: SPS Motorsport
Post by: Guido@SPS on April 29, 2019, 10:47:27 AM
I am Guido from SPS Motorsport and I would like to introduce you to our program.

We are the largest MX-5 tuner in Germany. We do not only convert vehicles for the road but also do a lot of racing.
Racing cars with partly over 500hp have already left our workshop and reached podium places in various races.

Here you can get some impressions:

Nice work!  :good:

I have seen many of your builds, would you mind sharing any details on them? What about the white NA (TA car I think?), how you managed to use 17" wheels on it? I know that you removed some material from the wheel wells but did you make any changes regarding the suspension setup?
Title: Re: SPS Motorsport
Post by: Guido@SPS on April 30, 2019, 09:37:31 AM
Hi Leon,

thank You. :) You're right. We had to remove much material to fit the 9x17" wheels with 20mm offset and 20mm spacers. The tires are 255/40 ZR17 Nankang AR-1. The big bodykit is necessary to fit rims and tires. We drive a BC Racing ER-Series on the NA, but the rest of the suspension like the wishbones is stock.

The engine is a billet 1.8 BP with a Borg Warner EFR6258 turbocharger. We dyno the car this week, then i can tell You what power the engine produces at which boost.  ;)

If want to have more information, also about the other cars, just ask me.  :)

Kind regards

The following weekend we are testing our racecars at Zandvoort to make them ready for the TimeAttack season.

And maybe we have a special surprise on the track. ;)

We had a successful weekend on Zandvoort. 5 of our 6 cars with their drivers got on the podium. The cars worked really well and we had no big issues. The drivers are also very happy with their cars and the work of our whole team. We are looking forward to the upcoming German TimeAttack season.

Great job, well done!  :good:
Which are your thoughts on the NLR wing on the white car in comparison with your old wing element?
Title: Re: SPS Motorsport
Post by: Guido@SPS on May 14, 2019, 10:30:08 AM
Hi Leon,

this is not very clear to say. We mounted it very early on Friday and it was the first run of the car this year. Also the angle was not very tough, so the downforce was not to much. We will watch it and see the results at the next run in Assen.

Did you chose the NLR wing over the BYC designs one for the increased chord length? Is there any chance you would bring for sale these NLR wings to Europe?

Hi Leon,

we sell all parts that are installed in the race cars. So also the NLR Wing. But You won't find it in the shop at the moment.
But You can ask for it via mail: info@sps-motorsport.com

We choosed this wing because it is able to produce more downforce in general to get the car more stable.

Here you can see a bit of everyday workshop life. This ND got a BBR GTi turbo kit. The car now makes 240hp. It also got 949 racing rims with semi-slicks, a big-brake-upgrade, an Öhlins suspension and an anti-rollbar from H&R. The car drives really well.

One customer brought us his car to get a suspension adjustment with his new rims, tires and our coilover.
We like this setup. The car has a sporty look.

Setup: Enkei RPF1 8x16 with 38mm offset on Yokohama Advan AD08R 225/45 R16 and our SPS coilover for the ND

Title: Re: SPS Motorsport
Post by: Guido@SPS on June 04, 2019, 09:58:00 AM
Hi, the spring rates are front 10kg and rear 8kg. The alignment setting depends on the use of the car. The customer drives firstly on the street, so we didn't make the dampers to stiff.

This time a really cool sleeper met us.

It has a Rotrex C30/94 supercharger on a 2.0l making 345hp and 360Nm of torque.
The car drives really nice because it feels like a big natural aspirated engine. High speed runs on the German Autobahn are no problem. ;)

The rest of the setup:
- Flyin Miata Header
- HJS 200 cells catalytic converter
- SPS Motorsport Catback
- Cat Cams Stage 1 camshafts
- forged pistons (compression 13:1)
- forged rods
- 750ccm injectors
- BC Racing BR-series coilover
- OZ Ultraleggera 8x17 with 40mmm offset on Yokohama AD08R 215/45 R17 tires
- K-Sport 8 piston calipers

Last weekend we had another TimeAttack run, this time at the "Reisbrennen".

We had some issues with the white NA and the green NB:
The white NA got another Turbo, a Borg Warner EFR 7670. At 1.5bar the fuel pressure got to low so we have to upgrade the fuelpump.
The green NB got problems with the ignition. We have to change the sparkplugs to a higher heat value.

But the rest of our cars performed pretty well and we saw many other MX-5 on the track. We are happy to MX-5s on the racetrack.

This year the world is celebrating 30 years of Mazda MX-5. So Mazda Germany had the idea to pay tribute by braking a record.
The idea was to drive as many corners as possible in 12 hours. The perfect job for a MX-5 NA.

So Mazda Germany came to us to get a red NA 1.6L prepared for the record. The limit was the power of the engine had to be stock.

So we installed these parts:
- engine oil cooling kit
- 6 speed transmission with gearbox oil cooling kit
- miataroadster short shifter
- Torsen-LSD with differential oil cooling kit
- SPS roll bar
- Sparco steering wheel
- Sparco Sprint seats
- Schroth racing 4-point harness
- StopTech 4-piston 286mm Big Brake Kit
- BC Racing ER-series suspension
- ATS DTC 15" rims
- Mishimoto radiator
- Competition Clutch Flywheel and Stage 3 Clutch
- custom exhaust
- custom rallye headlights

Then they set the record in the austrian alps. Mazda Germany also produced a YouTube series about that record. We are very proud to be part of that whole operation.

This is the car of a good friend of our company. The look of the car is really cool, but the engine is a tough one.

A BP block, reamed to 2 liters with an individual throttle body, race header, adjustable camshaft gears, race camshafts, revving to 8600rpm producing 230hp.
The sound the engine produces, is incredible! It screams like a race car! I think the owner, Jean Claudio Flensberg, has a good taste. ;)

Parts:
- 2.0L reamed BP block
- ARP head stud kit
- JE pistons 85.5mm
- K1 conrods
- ACL bearings
- adjustable camshaft gears
- race camshafts
- Supertech valves with Supertech valve spring kit
- Jenvey ITB
- engine oil cooling kit
- Racingbeat exhaust header
- Mishimoto radiator
- BC-Racing coilover
- Nardi deep corn steering wheel

Which Pistons give a 2.0 lt displacement and what camshafts did u used for 8600 rpm? Is the block from a BP Z3 or BP4W ENGINE block and which cylinder head? I see that there is no crank sensor?
Thanks

Hi iliasfyntanidis,

of course there is a crank sensor. The engine is a BP4W engine, because there is no VVT. The pistons are 85,5mm JE pistons custom built for us.

I see the pictures are not working at the moment. Directupload has some problems at the moment. I hope they fix it soon.

These are the camshafts in this engine:

Sorry @Guido@SPS  I meant cam sensor.
I see from the camshaft specs that they don't have enough overlap,as we all know its necessary and essential for N/A applications.
Even CatCams gives them for turbo applications and they have Lobe Seperation Angle of 110 degrees which doesn't match the engine characteristics(N/A) and the lift at TDC is tiny.
Do you mind sharing the timing of these cams for your application?

Mine camshafts also from CatCams which are for N/A application follow the usual norm, tight LSA and more overlap, that's the reason i am asking?

Any reason why did you selected Supertech(single or dual?) springs over the PAC springs CatCams recommends?

I'm sorry, it was the wrong datasheet. The datasheet was for another car of the customer, which will be turbocharged.

This is the right sheet:

Thanks Guido! It makes sense now.Are you using the OEM oil pump and harmonic balancer with this engine?

Ilias, they probably use grouped injection and wasted spark.

Guido, what do you use for engine management? Why didn't you go sequential?

Engine-wise, do you have any pics of the engine block with pistons installed without head? I would like to see the distance between 2 cylinders on the block as 2.5 overbore seems a lot.. Interesting!

Also please upload smaller pics as the thread takes forever to load..

Thank you

Hey Nitroking,

the ECU is a MSLabs MS2. We saw no advance in going sequential so we didn't change it.

Here You have a picture of the block:

This is one of the toughest conversions we ever made. A 2.5L V6 KL swap with an ITB. We had many issues with the car until it was ready to go on the street. But at the end we solved every problem and now the car runs fine. The block is bored from 2.5L to 2.6L equipped with Wiseco pistons and K1 conrods, main and conrod bearings are Toga high performance bearings. The head got solid cam followers with different camshaft and an individual throttle body. The engine produces 250hp with an airbox on the ITB and 300hp without the airbox.

Specs:
- 2.6L KL
- Wiseco pistons
- K1 conrods
- Toga high performance main and conrod bearings
- Catcams camshafts
- solid cam followers
- custom ITB
- custom airbox
- mishimoto radiator
- BC Racing BR-series coilover
- DIY microsquirt ECU

This 10th-anniversary NB got in our workshop because on our last trackday in Anneau Du Rhin the timing belt got destroyed by some dirt of the track.

We supposed the valves also got broken because of other camshafts and higher compression, but luckily nothing else got broken.

It is a 1.8L bored to 2.0L with an ITB and very aggressive camshafts. On the dyno it produces 230 natural aspirated horsepower at 7800rpm.
Because of that power and a shorter final drive in combination with a 6-speed gearbox and a shortshifter it is really much fun to drive. :D

Specs:
- 1.8L BP bored to 2.0L with 85.5mm pistons
- Jenvey ITB
- Mishimoto X-Line radiator for Honda Civic
- Reverie RH carbon airbox with custom ram-air hose
- König K 5000 seats

This is a supercharged NC from a good friend of the company. The car got a Rotrex C30/94 on its 2.0L installed producing 303hp and 314Nm.
Also the car got a nice look with it shiny rims and low coilover setup.

I think Kermit likes that. ;)

Another cool project, very well done!
Do you have any review about the Competitive Clutch Stage 3?
I cannot deside between Stage 2 and 3 for my daily driver!
Title: Re: SPS Motorsport
Post by: Guido@SPS on November 20, 2019, 03:04:00 PM
Hi drkonos,

it depends on Your engine setup.

A stage 2 clutch is absolutely enough for a natural aspirated engine, also when it has an individual throttle body installed. The stage 2 feels pretty similar to a stock clutch.

For turbo- or supercharger conversions we recommend at least a stage 3 clutch, just to be sure the clutch is able to deliver the torque. We always recommend the stage 3 for one of our standard turbo conversions on NA/NB/NC. The stage 3 is a little more difficult to handle, but if You use it for a while You will get into it. Then it works for daily. Our customers are very happy with the clutch solutions we offer and recommend them.

Here we have one of a rarer conversion, a rotrex C15-60 supercharger. The 1.8L BP engine produces 200 hp with 242 Nm/178 lbft torque. It also has a Stoptech Big Brake Kit, some 15" Rota Grid wheels with Federal 595 RS-R tires in 205/50 ZR15, a SPS "Extreme" rollbar, a race header, a mishimoto radiator and our coilover setup.

This NC is getting a Borg Warner EFR7163 turbocharger on a forged engine running with 1.3 bar boost tuned with a MS3. It will produce around 400hp at the flywheel with 455Nm/336lbft torque.
It also gets a full roll cage, fender flares, gearbox oil cooling system and differential oil cooling system.

Hello guys,

the first post in 2020, this time something special.

We also restore complete cars. The customer made the decision to restore his car completely from zero to the top.
It gets a new painting, new seals, new gaskets, new rubbers, a new windshield, a rollbar, Lotus Elise seats, a turboconversion (Borg Warner EFR 6758), a SPS coilover setup, and some nice wheels and tires.

We are filming the whole process and creating a time lapse video.

Hello SPS,

Any possibilities for NC owners?(2.5 lt) Ideally I am looking for a S/C kit.

Hi SteliosR,

we do not offer Supercharger kits for the NC.

But our SPS Turbokit for the NC would fit the 2.5L duratec engine.

Have a closer look here:

One of our bigger projects this year:

This MX-5 ND G184 gets a full engine swap to a 3.7L V6 LFX Camaro engine with transmission. And we use the car to develop a safety rollbar for the MX-5 ND, also to attache 4-point-harnesses.

Hey folks,

the last post was a few weeks ago. Now I have something new for You.

As You may know not only our customers drive MX-5s/Miatas, also some of our employees have them.

This is the car from our professional for all body work. It got a full Carbonmiata widebody kit which he installed by himself. The car also has a TD04 turbo conversion on its 1.8L BP making 250hp at the flywheel. To get the wheels (10,5x15 -13mm offset) fitted under the fenders he also installed camber arms on the rear axle together with our own SPS Super Low coilover setup. In the interior he installed a pair of Bride Low Maxx seats.
