"I’ve never really felt much for the current Mazda MX-5 and the new facelift does little to change my point of view.
The last one I loved and the first one doubly so. But the current one looks a little bloated and off the pace for my liking, especially when  it’s got a folding metal hard top.
I mentioned all this to Mazda’s design boss, Laurens van den Acker, several months ago and he seemed to agree with me. He started talking about the next MX-5, due in around 2012. He plans to make it much more dramatic and ‘give it some balls’. It will also be lighter and better to drive.
That, I’d say, is an MX-5 worth waiting for – not this rather tepid facelift."

"The next generation Mazda MX-5 could have a hybrid or diesel engine in an effort to reduce fuel consumption, but only if it doesn’t affect the character of the car. By TOBY HAGON.
The world’s most popular soft-top sports car, the Mazda MX-5, could soon have a green tinge with the addition of a hybrid powertrain and even a diesel engine.
The next generation MX-5 will also shrink in size in an effort to lower its weight by at least 10 per cent, in turn reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
As the two-seater sports car approaches its 20th anniversary, Mazda MX-5 program manager Takao Kijima says the company is studying environmentally friendly alternatives to the car’s four-cylinder petrol engines.
Kijima says a petrol-electric hybrid engine could be employed to reduce the fuel consumption of the MX-5 and reduce its already modest carbon dioxide emissions.
“I would say the chance of a diesel or hybrid engine [for MX-5] is more than 50 per cent,” says Kijima, who is adamant a decision has not been made on future powerplants for the MX-5.
A hybrid also creates several challenges for Mazda engineers; the character of the MX-5 was built around a simple, lightweight construction.
Yet hybrid powertrains contain heavy batteries that also take up space, something the MX-5 doesn’t have much of.
“[Keeping the weight of a hybrid down] is a big headache,” he says. “Packaging is another big problem with a hybrid.”
He also stipulates any future MX-5 variants would need to maintain the optimum weight balance of 50 per cent over the front wheels and 50 per cent over the rear wheels.
“We wouldn’t sell the technology [with a hybrid] we would sell the fun-to-drive,” says Kijima.
He also says a diesel engine is being considered for the MX-5, but that it would be a smaller capacity in an effort (possibly a 1.4-litre turbo four-cylinder) to overcome the inherently heavier weight of a diesel.
Kijima says the push for lower carbon dioxide emissions – known as greenhouse gas – is the main reason for considering alternative engines.
Kijima also says the next Mazda MX-5 will be smaller than the current car, bringing it closer in size to the original MX-5 that was first seen in 1989.
“In future we will achieve a minimum 10 per cent weight reduction [for the Mazda MX-5],” he says.
But Mazda says the smaller, lighter exterior will not compromise the already compact interior. Instead some clever design work and engineering packaging is expected to ensure the diminutive two-seater is at least as spacious as the current car and safer.
Kijima says the MX-5’s engines could also shrink as part of the weight-saving mission, instead relying on more advanced technologies – such as direct injection – to get equivalent performance from smaller capacities.
Having smaller engines also allows engineers to place them lower in the car for improved handling and dynamics.
“It’s very important to keep the centre of gravity low,” says Kijima.
Kijima admits he gets “many requests to make MX-5 bigger and more powerful”, mainly from the United States, but that the character of the car is built on its compact dimensions and light weight.
“We must balance these requests with nimble and light weight,” he says."

Next Mazda MX-5 to twin with RX-9
Mazda developing a lighter, more radical MX-5 alongside an RX-7 ‘replacement’
By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS - GoAuto

MAZDA’S post-modern take on the original 1960s Lotus Elan – the MX-5 – will take a decidedly post post-modern turn when the next all-new model arrives in 2012.

While the classic front-engine and rear-wheel drive proportions will carry through, the fourth-generation roadster will introduce smaller and far more efficient engine choices, lighter running gear and even electric power steering, to make the MX-5 the greenest – as well as the most controversial – convertible in Mazda’s history.

A sub-1000kg (2200 lb) kerb weight is the target, compared to the latest MX-5’s 1129kg to 1177kg (2483 lb to 2589 lb) mass.

Overseas reports suggest that the 2012 MX-5 is being developed alongside a secret new 2+2-seater coupe that will both replace and undercut the pricey RX-8 as Mazda’s flagship, and is deliberately being devised to evoke memories of the first RX-7 of 1978.

Also due in three years, ‘RX-9’ will be the closed coupe’s probable moniker, earning the right to be powered by a rotary engine.

But while both Mazda sports cars will share the same underbody architecture, the MX-5 will boast a far bolder visage in both soft-top and retractable hardtop configurations than any of the three previous generations since 1989.

Last year, Mazda design boss Laurens van den Acker told one European publication: “The last (MX-5) was too conservative and we can’t do another car like that. We need to make it more dramatic and give it some balls.”

By contrast, the RX-9 will abandon the sedan-like four-seater bodystyle and ‘suicide doors’ of its RX-8 predecessor for a shorter and sleeker two-door shape boasting a classic coupe silhouette.

According to a Mazda insider, there is also “no way” the next MX-5 will adopt the RX-9’s rumoured ‘16X’ 200kW-plus 1.6-litre twin-chamber rotary engine that is said to be more than 20 per cent more economical and significantly less polluting than the existing RENESIS 1303cc rotary unit found in the RX-8, as it will push the price point well beyond the current roadster’s sub-$45,000 (Australian) level.

Further, the inevitable size and mass increases associated with using a more powerful engine like a rotary, as well as the larger brake, clutch, suspension and body/chassis bracing componentry needed as a result of the associated output increases, are an anathema to Mazda’s weight-reduction goals.

Instead, the company is said to be developing a range of light and compact 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol (gasoline) engines that will use forced induction such as a turbocharger to achieve performance levels equal to or better than the 1.8 and 2.0-litre four-cylinder units offered today.

Fuel consumption and emissions outputs that are a fraction of today’s MX-5 are central to the small engine cause.

They are also behind the dropping of the lauded hydraulic powered rack and pinion steering system, for an electric unit.

Our source is also pessimistic about the MX-5’s chances of gaining Mazda’s upcoming dual-clutch manual gearbox that is slated for the RX-9, on the grounds of both price and complexity.

Meanwhile, while today’s MX-5 and RX-8 share suspension modules, Mazda’s concerted push to regain the lightness and litheness of the first-generation NA MX-5 model means the bulky double wishbone front end is expected to give way to a lighter set-up on both models.

Whether the next MX-5 and RX-9 adopt similarly sophisticated front wishbones and rear multi-link arrangements remains to be seen.

However, it is likely that the front-midship drivetrain layout that sees the current MX-5’s engine located just behind the front axle will again be used, to help it and the RX-9 achieve the desired 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution.

GoAuto has learned that, when development of the existing NC-series MX-5 commenced in 2002, Mazda was constrained by its previous overlords Ford to keep costs down by using the heavy RX-8 hardware, and this created many headaches for the engineers.

“This mistake will not be repeated,” our source promised.

Incredibly, considering the strong following the MX-5 has had over the past 20 years, the NC soft-top almost never made it to production for the same reason, as Ford was keen to replicate the success of the Peugeot 206 CC with a retractable folding hard-top design.

Mazda’s engineers in Japan, in strong favour of continuing with the light fabric roof, devised two NC MX-5 prototypes, but the soft-top was initially knocked back because it required different – and prohibitively expensive – rear-quarter sheetmetal to the signed-off folding hardtop model.

“But once Ford design boss J. Mays saw how good the soft-top MX-5 looked against the retractable hard-top version, he convinced Ford’s hierarchy to invest in both roof options,” our source revealed.

Low weight and greater efficiency might not be the sexiest of selling points for a sports car unless you're a devotee of Lotus founder Colin Chapman's "add lightness" philosophy. Thankfully for those less-is-more enthusiasts, however, Mazda has steadily adhered to that formula with its MX-5 Miata – and now, word from the crew at GoAuto is that company engineers are working even harder to adhere to that design philosophy, with thoughts of smaller, force-fed engines and lighter curb weights dominating discussions for the next iteration of the iconic roadster.

There have long been rumors of a rotary-powered MX-5, but that's probably not in the cards. A modern take on the RX-7 is supposedly being worked up to take a new version of Felix Wankel's whirling dervish of an engine zipping into the future, with the MX-5 getting a newly developed line of four cylinders with direct injection and forced induction (finally!). A heavy-breathing Miata, packing the muscle of a MazdaSpeed3, for instance, might move the neo-MGB into a new realm at the top of its range.

Three words that tend to generate a half-frown on enthusiasts faces are being thrown about in the same sentence as the new Miata: "Electric power steering." We can see the push for the greater energy efficiency that EPS offers, but hopefully Mazda can make the Miata's helm joyously alive instead of Toyota Corolla-style numbness, all shot up with Novocaine (as most such systems tend to be).

Chassis details are also in the realm of conjecture at this point, but with words like "lighter" being shoved at us, we expect some significant re-engineering going on under the skin. That skin, by the way, will likely be more expressive than the rather safe MX-5 we have now, with Mazda's design chief Laurens van den Acker on record as saying the plan is for the car to "be more dramatic and give it some balls."
